David Fager was born in 1814 in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Conrad Fager (1778-1867) and Rosanna Fisher Fager (1789-1859).

His first wife was Julia Ann Cadmus and in 1850 they were living in Brooksville, Ogle, Illinois.

In 1859, David Fager married Elizabeth Tice in Ogle County, Illinois. The couple "adopted" Idaetta Helder in about 1871. Idaetta, her twin sister, Ada, and her seven older siblings were motherless and "sent out" to various relatives and families. David and Elizabeth called Idaetta, "Carrie".

Shortly after receiving Carrie, David and Elizabeth moved to Willow Springs, Douglas County, Kansas and were living there by 1875. David was a farmer. The family remained at that location. David and Elizabeth raised and educated Carrie, who took classes at nearby Lane University.

David Fager died June 10, 1902 at Overbrook, Osage County, Kansas.
