Thelma Coombs Haugen Brown

Thelma "Toots" Haugen Brown, 85, of Corvallis died Saturday, March 22, 2008, at the Marcus Daly Hospice Center.

She was born to Jessie and Charles Coombs on March 9, 1923, in Tacoma, Wash.

She married Allen Haugen on May 13, 1941, in Los Angeles while Allen was serving aboard the USS Ranger during World War II. They lived mostly in the Los Angeles area till moving to Fresno, Calif., in 1957. He preceded her in death in 1966. They were married for 25 years.

She married Walter Brown in Santa Cruz, Calif., on May 13, 1967. They lived in Fresno and the Mariposa area till Walter retired from PG&E. They moved to Walter's home state of Montana in 1990. Walter was in the Army during the Korean War. He preceded her in death in 1994. They were married for 27 years.

Thelma served with her first husband in the Civil Air Patrol as a search and rescuer. Allen was a pilot and Thelma was an air spotter. She dispatched the rescue teams when needed.

Thelma also served as a dietary assistant in the Fresno schools for nine years. She was a certified nursing assistant.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie and Charles Coombs; stepfather, Robert Markle, brothers, Lawrence and Ross Coombs; sister, Gladys Warner Ballew; husbands, Allen Haugen and Walter Brown; and son, Richard Haugen.

Thelma is survived by her son, Alan T. Haugen; daughter, Karen A. Klein and son-in-law Jack Klein of Corvallis; sister, Lois Rabitoy of Rogue River, Ore.; brother, Charles Coombs Jr. of Farr West, Utah; several nieces and nephews; and two grandaughters.

A graveside service will be held at Corvallis Cemetery
