Olympic Gold Medalist Athlete, Professional Football Player. Born James Ray Hines the ninth of twelve children, he was raised in Oakland, California where his father worked in construction and his mother at a cannery. While attending Lowell Junior High School, he participated in baseball and later at McClymonds High School, he excelled at track & field where he became one of the top ranked athletes in the country. During this period, he finished the 100-meter race below 10 seconds two-times, 9.7 seconds during his sophomore year in 1962 and 9.4 seconds during his senior in 1964 respectively. Hines enrolled at Texas Southern University and in 1968 at the AAU Outdoor National Championship, he set a then-world record when he was clocked at 9.9 seconds in the 100-meter race, thus becoming the first person to ever accomplish this feat under 10 seconds. During the 1968 Olympic Summer Games in Mexico City, Hines was clocked at 9.9 seconds in the 100-meter event and earned a gold medal. He received an additional gold medal as part of the 4x100 meter relay team. After his Olympic experiences, he was drafted by the Miami Dolphins during the 6th round of the 1969 NFL Draft. He went on to play for two-seasons at the wide receiver position in the American and National Football Leagues with the Miami Dolphins (1969) and Kansas City Chiefs (1970). After retiring from football, he established a foundation for battered women and abused youth in the Oakland-area.
