Evelyn Mae Wise, 85, passed away Jan. 15, 2014. She was born Dec. 23, 1928, to John and Hilma (Swanson) Calene at the Swedish settlement of Nora, just east of Troy, Idaho. She was the fifth of 12 children. She graduated from Troy High School in Troy.

After graduation, she worked in Wenatchee as a telephone operator, where she met Henry (Hank) Wise, and three weeks later they were married on Nov. 2, 1947. Hank and Evelyn then moved to Coalinga, Calif., where they lived for three years. While there, their first three sons were born, Daniel, Douglas and Keith. Not liking the California heat, they moved back to the mountains of Troy, where their last two sons, Roger and Dale, were born. Three months later they moved to St. Maries, Idaho, and lived there for three years while Evelyn stayed at home with her five boys. The family then moved to Lewiston for a year, then moved back to Troy for four and a half years. During that time, Evelyn worked as a housekeeper in Moscow. The family then moved back to Lewiston, where she worked as a special dietary cook at St. Joseph Hospital for two years. She then worked as a sales clerk and temp for many years. She later worked as a waitress at the Hilltop Cafe, continued her work as a waitress and began cooking at the Villa Restaurant, where her homemade pies were well known to many.

Evelyn's hobbies were gardening, baking, crocheting, sewing and enjoying her abundant houseplants that needed accommodation by a sunroom addition on the family home. Her favorite activities were bowling, fishing (especially perch) and camping at Benewah/Chatcolet. She was a member of Orchards Christian Church, where she contributed her handmade and homemade goods for the funding of building the new church.

She is survived by her sons, Daniel Wise, Keith and Kris Wise, Roger and LaVerne Wise, and Dale and Vicky Wise; 18 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by siblings Norma Pfiester, Louise Larrazolo, Pete Calene, MaryAnn Lund, Mike Calene, Faye Painter and Larry Calene. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Hank; son Douglas; her parents; and siblings Lucille Baker, Willis Calene, Kenneth Calene and Vivien Calene.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home in Lewiston, and a reception will follow at 3:30 p.m. at the Lewiston Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall, at 1104 Warner Ave., Lewiston.
