He was born May 16, 1936, to John Berger Calene and Hilma (Swanson) Calene, the eighth of 12 children. Pete attended school in Troy before enlisting in the U.S. Navy and serving aboard the USS Shangri-La. He later earned his degree as a refrigeration technician.
Pete married Betsy (Hartwig) Calene on March 21, 1961, living in Lewiston, and Gillette, Wyo., until her death in 1996.
Pete married his second wife, Jan (Brinkley) Calene, on Nov. 2, 1997, living in Elk River and later Bellingham, Wash., until her death in 2013.
Pete had various jobs during his life and eventually retired from Black Thunder Coal Mine in Wyoming. He enjoyed working with dogs and horses and participated in the Pony Express Centennial rides in Wyoming, and recently was the resident grandpa at Cactus Jack's Horse Camp in Bellingham. He was also a 17-year cancer survivor and participated in the Relay for Life event in Bellingham.
Pete was preceded in death by Betsy; Jan; his son, James; brothers Willis and Kenneth; sisters Lucile, Vivien, Evelyn and Faye; nieces Inga and Kathy; nephews Randy, Steven and Doug; eight aunts; seven uncles; and 17 cousins.
Internment is at Moscow Cemetery, 1650 Troy Road, Moscow.
