California Directory for Nevada County, 1895 lists John Fay in Truckee as a Saloon Keeper. Historical Documents from Truckee Donner Historical Society for history of Old town Truckee show the following for owner ship of

In the early part of this century, this was a saloon owned and operated by Frank Zunino. Before that, the saloon was Johnny Fay's "Fireproof Saloon" which was known for selling "Woodpecker Cigars" and "Enterprise Beer." Before that, it was William McDougald's "Fountain Saloon."
Prior to that, the location was part of the Sherritt House Hotel and the bottom floor was used as a grocery and stationary store.
The California state roster, 1899 & 1911 County officials/Nevada County shows John Fay as being on the Board of Supervisors.
An historical article in the Sierra Sun mentions of John Fay as Saloon owner and Nevada County Supervisor and construction supervisor during the year 1904 for the construction of the cesspool for the sewer system in Truckee.

He was also located various times in the California Voter Registrations, 1900-1968.
California Census, 1900 Meadow Lake Township (Truckee) shows the Fay family was the 84th dwelling visited and the 84th family. The date of the census is June 12, 1900 and the family included John; head of household, born July 1851, married for 16 years. John was born in Ireland as were both his parents. The census shows he emigrated in 1860 and was naturalized. His occupation is listed as Supervisor, reads/writes and speaks English and that he owned his home free of mortage. His wife, Ellen M., is listed as being Born July 1861, married for 16 years; the mother of 3 children, 2 still living. She was born in Ireland as were both her parents. Children included Phillip J., born May 1885 in California. He was attending school during the census year and his sister Myrtle E. was born March 1893 in California. They were also located in Meadow Lake Township (Truckee) in 1910. This census shows they were the 107th dwelling visited and the 111th family listed. At this time they were living on West Church St. The census is dated April 18, 1910. John's occupation is listed as Supervisor, County of Nevada. This census shows his wife Ellen as the mother of two children, one living. The census lists their daughter Myrtle, no occupation. Ellen was not located in the 1920 census.
