George William Jones, son of James P Jones and Sarah Ann Conner, was born August, 1850 in Marshall County, Virginia. By 1880 US Census, his mother has moved the family to Peoria Illinois. George married Susan Jane Knox on 1 July 1880 in Peoria. By 1885 the family moved to Burlingame, Osage County, Kansas.

1885 Kansas State Census find George and Susan residing in Burlingame. Also listed on the same census page is sister Florence and her husband George B Swick.
