Don was born in Shevlin, MN. and was the son of Ludvig and Birdie Ysen. He attended school in Gonvick anf late moved to Montana where he worked as a logger. He moved back to Grand Forks where he married Deloris A. Weber. On December 11, 1952, he was inducted into the U S. Army. He served in the Army Artillery and was stationed in Korea and fought on the Korean War. Upon discharge he worked at Rydell Chevrolet for 25 years as a body repair man.
