Samuel P. Black enlisted at Montgomery, Alabama, on July 26, 1861, as Private in Capt. [E. B.] Smith's Company, 13th Regiment, Alabama Infantry. The company muster roll from July 26 to August 8, 1861, notes "Mustered for six months pay for clothing this 8th day of August, 1861." Capt. Smith's company subsequently became Company K, 13th Regiment, Alabama Infantry. When S. P. Black, Company K, received a $50 bounty on October 24, 1862, he signed with his mark.
Company K muster rolls for January 1862 through February 1863 note that Pvt. S. P. Black was absent as a nurse in Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. Hospital muster rolls show him attached to General Hospital Camp Winder, Richmond, Virginia, on May 19, 1862, employed as nurse. Pvt. S. P. Black, nurse, appears on a list dated October 12, 1862, of "wardmasters, nurses, etc.," in General Hospital Camp Winder, Richmond, Virginia, "who are able for active field service and whose places are to be filled by conscripts." Other records show him admitted to Winder Division Hospital on December 3, 1862. Pvt. S. P. Black, age 22, was admitted to General Hospital No. 2 on December 7, with variola, and was transferred to Howards Grove Hospital on December 14, 1862. He returned to duty on January 7, 1863. A register of Small Pox Hospital, Richmond, Virginia, records that he had his first vaccination "4 wks", with result "not taken," and was never revaccinated.
Pvt. S. P. Black was captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on July 1, 1863. As Prisoner of War, he was confined at Fort McHenry, Maryland, on July 5 or 6, 1863, and was sent to Fort Delaware on July 1863. He died of typhoid fever on September 10, 1863, as a Prisoner of War at Fort Delaware, Delaware.
