Giglio

Italian: from the personal name Giglio from giglio 'lily' (from Latin lilium) a plant considered to symbolize the qualities of candor and purity.

Sabato Giglio was born in Palomonte, Salerno Italy on April 22,1882 to Sabato and Antonia Conte Giglio. Sabato Gigli, Sr. arrived in the United States on April 17, 1897 on the ship "Patria" (listed as age 50 and born about 1847. Sabato, Jr (subject of this sketch) was a brother to Maria Giglio Mirro. He arrived in the United States on May 10, 1900 from Naples Italy on the ship "Sempione." On the same ship was his uncle, Angelo Giglio who is listed as a barber. Sabato Giglio, Jr. was 19 years old and his uncle, Antonio was 47 years old upon their arrival in the United States. His sister, Maria Giglio Mirro followed him to America and arrived in the US on November 11, 1907 with her young daughter Antoinette, age 4. Maria's husband, Vito Mirro, arrived from Palomonte, Salerno Italy on July 6, 1905, two years prior to the arrival of his wife and child. Sabato Giglio paid the passage for his sister Maria's husband (Vito Mirro) to the United States. Vito Mirro arrived in the United States on the ship "Sicilia."

Sabato Giglio was a freight handler for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He first lived at 38 Morningside Avenue in Wilmerding, PA and later at 639 Pitcairn Street in Wilmerding, PA. He and his wife, Lucrezia (1888-1981) are buried near his sister, Mary and her husband, Vito Mirro, in the Saint Joseph Cemetery in North Versailles, Pennsylvania.

Thanks to Edith Barrett I have added the following:

Sabato died at the age of 65 from lung cancer in 1947. He married Lucretia (Mary) Tomasino. She was born March 9, 1888 and died in April 1981. We called her "granny." She was barely 5 feet tall but loved her family and made everyone welcome and could she cook! She is buried next to of Sabato (Sam). We have been told that she married when she was 16. They lived all of their lives in Wilmerding PA. Their children were:

Antoinette GIglio Rosetti 1907-2007

Joseph Giglio 1909-

Helen Giglio (never married) 1911-2004

Midred Giglio Barrett 1912-1985

Patsy Giglio 1917-1970

Elmer Giglio 1920-1993

Julia Giglio Polonchak 1922-

There were at least two other children and the first child, a son, died right after birth and another daughter, also named Julia died after catching her communion dress on fire. Joseph was sent to New Jersey to live with relatives. He married a woman named Mary and lived in Garfield. They had a daughter named "Dolly" and she married an Ed Sabol, lived in Lodi and they had one daughter. There are relatives that lived on a farm in Vineland, New Jersey but not sure of the relationship.
