DROWNING AT WESTPORT

A camping party consisting of Mr. Jessen, his wife and family, Mrs. P.N.Nassen of San Francisco, Mr. Hussey and family, Miss Severence, James Murphy, and Nana Lund, all of Rockport, went to the South Fork of the Eel River last week. On Sunday last the entire party went bathing.

As soon as Hans Lund waded to where the water reached his breast, he sank, and before assistance reached him he drowned. It is believed, says a dispatch to the Chronicle, that the shock of the cold water affected his heart. The remains were brought to Rockport for burial. Lund was a native of Norway, aged 28.

On Monday, the judge was called to Rockport to hold an inquest. This was on the body of Has Lund, aged 28 years, a native of Norway and well-known and respected along the coast.

A party of fourteen left Rockport Saturday to camp for a few days on the South Fork of the Eel River near Joe King's ranch. They were Mr. Hussey and his family; Miss Severance, Fred Severance; James Murphy and Hans Lund of Rockport and Mr. and Mrs. Jessen and family and Mrs. P.N. Mansen of San Francisco.

On Sunday at 2 p.m. they all went bathing, Mr. Hussey and Lund going downstream to a deep hole. Lund was there first in the water and as soon as the cold water struck him he seemed to lose all power and control of himself; slid into the deep hole and did not come up to the surface again. Mr. Hussey, not being a swimmer, could not render any personal assistance but ran and obtained help as quickly as possible, but too late to save the young man's life.

It is supposed that heart failure had more to do with his death than the water as he had been complaining for some time past. A sorrowing number of his personal friends laid him to rest in the DeVilbiss Cemetery near Rockport, on Tuesday, the corner officiating at the grave.
