Robert Louis Stevenson wrote "Like a bird singing in the rain, let grateful memories survive in time of sorrow."
We all have those grateful memories of our now gone but never forgotten friend and loved one, Kyle Crandall. Kyle is someone different to each of us here in this service but shares the commonality of being loved by all of us and he will no doubt be missed by all of us. We all share a personal connection to Kyle that we will continue to hold special and dear in our hearts.
Kyle was born in Dearborn Michigan on June 16th, 1966, to Robert Neil and Joyce Crandall. Kyle enjoyed a pleasant childhood where did some guitar covers for a family favorite Glen Campbell and later played baseball on the local township team for several years. Kyle was a happy kid, especially if he had his daily ration of Mountain Dew from N&J Party store, a local favorite. Kyle exhaustively helped his brother Clay with his paper route, often in record snowfall scenarios, often even doing it alone. This was of course his brothers master plan in conditioning Kyle and ensuring Kyle had what it takes, so he could get his own route when the time came. Throughout High school Kyle liked working out, hanging out with friends, and making some hard-earned cash while working at his paper route and eventually Kroger.
Kyle graduated with distinction from Oscar Carlson High School, Gibraltar Michigan in 1984 and enlisted in the United States Navy. Kyle was accepted into the nuclear program due to his superior academics. His path was however changed a few months into his training due to Department of Navy needs and Kyle accepted a position as a machinist mate. Kyle excelled in his technical training and soon was assigned a position on the USS Birmingham, a Los Angeles Class Nuclear Submarine, where he served from Oct 16, 1985 – Nov 16, 1989. Kyle was stationed at Pearly Harbor, Hawaii and had it real rough for a couple years with all the beaches and sunshine, and all but reluctantly remained there until his discharge.
After the Navy Kyle remained in touch with his Navy pals and attended a recent reunion with the crews of the retired submarine. Kyle went forward into the civilian life as a tool and die Journeyman, eventually working for Ford Motor Company until his health kept him from the job he loved.
Out of all the accomplishments and experiences Kyle had, those of us who knew him best knew his paramount accomplishment was that of being a family man. After a short engagement Kyle married Amy Salisbury in June of 2005. Kyle and Amy have together raised a son Kadin, a true gift from God and a freshman in the same high school Kyle attended. Kadin is working hard to make his dad proud and plans a future in computer science after service in the US Army.
Kyle was preceded in death by his mother Joyce (Shaw) Crandall whom he has always missed and sister Sheila Hahn. Kyle himself leaves many loved ones behind. A loving wife Amy (Salisbury) Crandall and son Kaden Crandall, Father Robert Neil Crandall and his wife Janice (Pushee) Crandall, brother Clay Crandall and his wife Janet (Skiffington) Crandall, sister Robin Lee Crandall, Brother-in-law Russ Hahn, two nephews, two nieces, four cousins, two grand nieces, four stepchildren Justin, Jordan, Eric, and Alisha as well as several grandchildren of his wife Amy who generously shared them with Kyle. The love of these children is what Kyle lived for and they gave him great comfort throughout his life, but more importantly as he grew more ill. Kyle talked about them until his last days.
Kyle would want to be remembered for being a patriotic family man that loved all his family and friends with a devoted heart and for one that was in touch with his deeply satisfied life brought on by being around those that he loved. We will miss Kyle but take great value in knowing he is at peace and has left us some wonderful memories. I recently enjoyed a quote from Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. in discussing brotherhood, "There is no time like the old time, when you and I were young!" How very true Kyle as we had some good times. Until we meet again, brother!
