VERNE WESTPHAL DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS

Verne Westphal, 41, 305 West 6th, died Monday night at Hadley Memorial Hospital following an illness of more than a year. Survivors are his widow, Iona; two children, LaVetta, 12, and Donald, 10; three sisters, Mrs. Charles Hawkins, Van Nuys, Calif.; Mrs. Edwin Brien and Mrs. Les Cohen, La Puenta, Calif., and a brother, W. W. Westphal, the Dalles, Ore.

Born at Ellis, Verne Westphal had lived in Hays where he was associated in business with his father-in-law, Herman Pratt, for fourteen years. Mrs. Westphal is the former Iona Pratt. He was a veteran of the Second World War, having been in the first group to leave Hays for military service at the outbreak of the war.

Tentative plans have been made for funeral services Thursday afternoon at the Hays Methodist church with burial at Ellis.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to a cancer fund at the office of the Methodist Church here.
