When her father's second wife Siller died, Sarah took care of all of the small children and raised them.

She married Lafayette "Peter" Hayes on Feb 18, 1909. He had first been married to Caroline Davidson, but she died in 1905.

When Sarah married Peter, she raised his three children from his first marriage. (This was the second family of children that she raised).

Sarah and Peter had several children of their own. But Peter died in 1917, at a young age. He was only 39. So then Sarah raised her third family of children, her own.

After all of her children grew up and moved out of the house, she moved in with her daughter Jewell, and helped her raise her children. Jewell and her husband worked really long hours, and so they needed Sarah's help. This was the fourth family of children she raised.

Sarah was well known throughout Quicksand Creek for the "Ho cakes" that she baked. They were just little pieces of bread with sugar on them, but the children loved them.

Sarah enjoyed smoking her stone pipe, and sitting in her rocking chair. But she died of cancer of the mouth. She was buried next to Peter.
