John W. Mette, Retired Newspaper Editor, Dies

John Wayland Mette of Yemassee, retired editor and publisher of the Hampton County Democrat, died Thursday at a local hospital.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sturhr's North Area Chapel. Burial will be in Great Salkehatchie Cemetery at Ulmer.

Mr. Mette was born Jan.12, 1903, in Augusta, Ga., son of John A. Mette and Cecil Royal Mette. He was a member of Catholic Apostolic Church of America and a Marine Corps and Coast Guard veteran of WW1.

He represented the International News Service here in the 1930's and was head of The Citadel's printing department from 1945 - 1958

He was the last remaining survivor of the originators of Hampton County Watermelon festival. H was a conductor for the Atlantic Coastline Railroad for 47 years and was a life member of the Brotherhood of Trainmen and Conductors.

Surviving are a son. Jack L. Mette of Yamassee; a brother Norman R. Mette of Charleston; three sisters Mrs. Freda McEwen, Geneva M. Strezlec and Evelyn M. Cooper, all of North Charleston; and three step - grandchildren.
