He came to the U.S. in 1871 with his family from Bad Landeck, Upper Silesia, Germany or Prussia. They lived in Douglas, Montcalm County, Michigan, and he left for Texas. He traded a shotgun for land at Southmayd, Grayson County, Texas, and went back to Montcalm County to marry Catherine Rebecca Sheaffer on Feb. 11, 1894. They settled in Grayson County, Texas, and eventually moved to Springer, New Mexico, in about 1921.
