William Flickinger, a highly respected citizen of Newport, died suddenly of heart failure Wednesday afternoon of last week, aged 65 years, 4 months and 8 days. He was stricken with rheumatism in April in his left arm, which later spread to his body, terminating fatally. He was a shoemaker by trade. Deceased was a veteran of the Civil war, having served in Co. G., 133d P. V., and was wounded at Fredericksburg and sent home, but reenlisted in Co. F., 104th P. V., serving until the close of the war. He had been a resident of Newport since 1869. Nov. 1, 1876, he was married to Miss Laura Liggett. Two children resulted from this union; Miss Marion, a teacher in Porto Rico, who is now on her way home, and Harold, in the western part of the State. He is survived by the following brothers and sister: John of Sandy Hill, George of Carlisle, Benjamin of Marysville, Harry of Philadelphia, Martin, who had been associated with him in business for many years, and Mrs. Susan Wagner of Oliver township. Interment at Newport Friday, sermon by Rev. C. O. Bosserman.

William Flickinger enlisted in Perry County August 5, 1862, and mustered into federal service August 11 as a corporal with Co. G, 133rd Pennsylvania Infantry. Wounded at the battle of Fredericksburg December 13, 1862, he was discharged by surgeon's certificate April 14, 1863. He also enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg March 23, 1865, as 2nd lieutenant of the second organization of Co. F, 104th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 25, 1865. William Flickinger was shot in the thigh at the battle of Fredericksburg, but his service records fail to mention which leg. He was discharged the service by surgeon's certificate from Hammond U.S. Hospital, Point Lookout, Maryland.
