Family-Placed Obituary

The Rev. Dr. Harold G. Odum, 79, a retired Presbyterian Minister, died Thursday, August 26, 2004, at his Fort Worth home.

Harold G. Odum was born June 23, 1925, in Clinton, Missouri, and spent most of his life in Texas.

A graduate of Austin High School, The University of Texas at Austin, and Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree by Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College) in 1980.

During WW II, at age nineteen, he served as a Platoon Sergeant in the 95th Infantry Division, was wounded during the battle for Metz, France, and spent a year in Army hospitals before returning to college.

He served as pastor of two churches, First Presbyterian Church, Temple (1951 - 1957) and First Presbyterian Church, San Angelo (1957 - 1986), retiring early due to complications from a bullet wound from an enemy sniper during WW II.

Dr. Odum served on numerous boards and committees of Presbytery and Synod, including nine years as chairman of the board of trustees of the Presbyterian Children's Home and Service Agency. He especially enjoyed preaching and pastoral care and for 25 years taught an Inquirers Class for adults that centered on theology and faith. As one who always sought knowledge and truth, he attended many lectures and conference in Europe and the U.S. to hear the outstanding preachers and theologians of the day, often accompanied by groups of laymen from his congregation. He also brought a number of these distinguished speakers to San Angelo to enable members of the congregation to hear them.

He was preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of his children, Margaret McCurdy Odum. Survivors: wife, Virginia; four children, Mary Beth Bigger and her husband, Mike, Harold G. Odum Jr., Peggy Winkler and her husband, Matt and Jan Odum; grandchildren, Margaret Bigger, Daniel, Josh and John Winkler; brothers, Bardwell Odum, and his wife, Mildred of Dallas, William Odum, and his wife, Betty of Dallas, Arthur Odum, and his wife, Bitsy of Midland; and the children of his present wife, Barbara Clemons, and her husband, Leland, John C. Simons and his wife, Rose; and her six grandchildren.
