Jack's parents were Giuseppe Messina and Maria Antonia Scaturro. He married Catarina Drago on 25 September 1915 in Fitchburg, Worcester, Massachusetts. They moved to Chicago, Illinois, about 1928.

OBITUARY: "Messina Giacamo (Jack) Messina, beloved husband of Catherine, nee Drago; dear father of Mary Rocco Rossi, Joseph (Sally), Annette Richard Nitz, Michael (Alice), Charles (Dolores), Mamie (James) Barca, Sam, Jack Jr., Peter (Annette), Catherine (Robert) Belmont, and James; fond grandfather of 22; great-grandfather of four. Funeral Thursday, 9 a. m., from Lombardo Funeral Home, 3425 W. Chicago avenue, to Notre Dame church. Mass 10 a. m. Interment Queen of Heaven. Please omit flowers."
