Charles Baab Dies at 91
Funeral Scheduled Saturday Morning
Charles J. Saab, 90 Sambourne Street, died yesterday in Wyoming Valley Hospital at the age of 91. He was hospitalized two and one-half weeks after suffering a broken hip in a fall.
A native and life resident of Wilkes-Barre, Mr. Baab was educated in Harry Hillman Academy and was graduated from University of Notre Dame the Class of 1901. He was the second resident of this area to graduate from the university, the first being Frank Ward O'Malley, who later became a nationally known newspaperman. At Notre Dame Mr. Baab helped devise and demonstrate a device which exhibited the practicability of the Marconi wireless system, then in its infancy. In 1948 he was cited as "Notre Dame Man of the Year" by the Wilkes-Barre Notre Dame Club. While at the university he played on the football team, and through his life was interested in Notre Dame's sports activities.
For many years he was in the plumbing business founded by his late father, Frank Baab, and also served as an electrical engineer. He was a member of the Plumbers Examining Board and helped draft Wilkes-Barre City's first plumbing code. He was active in a number of religious, fraternal, civic and political organizations, among them Council 302, Knights of Columbus; Post 132 American Legion, St. Conrad's Society, St. Vincent de Paul Society and St. Alphonsus Retreat League. He was a member of St. Nicholas Church and its Holy Name Society; Notre Dame Alumini Association and Retired Men's Club of Wilkes-Barre YMCA.
Mr. Baab married Elizabeth R. Horn in 1911. The family resided on Sambourne Street since 1913. Mr. Baab was well known as a poet and took a keen interest in civic affairs. He was a well-known figure about town despite his advanced years and was a frequent visitor to Wilkes-Barre Publishing Company building, Wilkes-Barre City Hall, Luzerne County Courthouse and King's College.
He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War and World War 1 and served as scoutmaster of Bay Scout troop at St. Nicholas Church.
Besides his wife he is survived by sons, Frank C., assistant circulation manager for Wilkes-Barre Publishing Company, Kingston; Carl G., Newport News, Va., with NASA; George L., Mountaintop, manager of Barre Optical Company, Wilkes-Barre; a daughter, Mrs. William Dohman, Wilkes-Barre; 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. George H. Garcelon, Longmeadow, Mass.
Funeral will be held Saturday morning at 9 from the funeral home, 233 South Washington Street, with a Requiem Mass at 9:30 in St. Nicholas Church. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery.
Friends may call tonight 7 to 10 and Friday 2 to 4 and 7 to 10.
