NATIVE OF CITY, DIES HERE AT 72
Scores Mourn Widow of Prominent Civil War Veteran - Funeral Monday
Termination of a long life, during which she had been noted for graciousness, kindness and generosity, came yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock when Mrs. Josephine Baab, aged 72, widow of the late Frank Baab, died of complications in Mercy Hospital, following two weeks' illness, during which an operation was found necessary.
Mr. Baab, former prominent merchant and Civil War Veteran, died on December 14, 1923, bringing the date of Mrs. Baab's death within two days of the sixth anniversary of her husband's demise.
MMrs. Baab was the daughter of Nicholas and Mary Maurer Hochreiter, pioneer settlers in Wyoming Valley, having located here nearly a century ago. She was born in Wilkes-Barre, December 1, 1857. She was a devout Christian and possessed of a lovable character that endeared her to a legion of friends. Her ever willingness to help the needy will be sadly missed.
On October 2R, 1877, deceased was married to Frank Baab. Of the union three children were born, all of whom survive: Charles J. Baab, of this city; Mrs. George H. Garcelon, of Springfleid, Mass., and J. Frederick Baab, of this city; also eight grandchildren and a brother, Jacob Hochreiter, of this city.
Mrs. Baab was a devout communicant of St. Nicholas Church and exceptionally active in the work of pariah societies. She was a past president of the Ladies' Aid Society and one of the organizers. She also was affiliated with the Woman's sodality and Third Order of St. Francis, a member and past president of Woman's Relief Corps, 37, Auxiliary to G. A. R., and a member of American Legion Auxiliary, Wilkes-Barre, Post 132, Council of Catholic Women, and local chapter of Needlework Guild of America.
The funeral will be held from the family home, 29 Sheldon street, on Monday morning. A high mass of requiem will be celebrated in St. Nicholas' Church. Interment will be in the family plot in Oaklawn cemetery.
