5123 Corporal A Munden, 2nd Battalion the (King's Own) Royal Lancaster Regiment. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Dilwara on 2 Dec 1899 and arrived on 25 Dec 1899. Along with the 2nd Lancashire Fusiliers, the 1st South Lancashire Regiment, and the 1st York and Lancaster Regiment, they formed the 11th Brigade under Major General Woodgate. They were sent to Durban to take part in the relief of Ladysmith. They were in the actions about Venter's Spruit on the 19-21 Jan 1900 and took part in the assault on Spion Kop on 23/24 Jan 1900 (37 killed, over 100 wounded and about 50 missing). Corporal Munden was one of those wounded in the attack at Spion Kop on 24 Jan 1900, some 6 miles east of Acton Homes. He was evacuated to No 4 Stationary Field Hospital at Spearman's Farm, about 6 miles north of Winterton, Natal where he died of his wounds 4 days later on 28 Jan 1900. He was buried in Spearman's Cemetery.
