Leonard attended schools in Churdan, Dexter, and Stuart. He served in the United States Army from September 9, 1952 until his Honorable Discharge as a Sergeant on June 25, 1954. During his time in the Army he was awarded the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. On October 19, 1957, he married Mary Agnes Downey at St. John's Basilica in Des Moines. They lived in many communities before settling near Yale in 1970. Leonard worked as a farmer, tractor mechanic, factory worker, and truck driver. He retired in his mid 60's. He became a resident of Panora Specialty Care in October of 2016.
Leonard enjoyed traveling with Mary and tinkering around home. He was a member of the V.F.W., the American Legion, and St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Panora.
Leonard is survived by his children, Michael Simons of California; Lisa (Mike) Stang of Illinois; Laura (Don ) Luke of Ohio; and Mark (Jodi) Simons of West Des Moines; 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; brothers, Eugene, Edward, and Leroy Simons. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary on March 4, 2020, and 8 brothers and sisters.
Memorial services will be 10:00 AM, Saturday, March 4, 2023 at the Twigg Funeral Home, Panora. Burial of his cremains will be in Calvary Cemetery, Stuart, Iowa.
