Bernadine Marie Burke, 87, passed away Sunday, January 1, 2017, in Madrid, IA. Bernadine was born June 30, 1929, in Churdan, IA, to Edward and Mary (Scharfenkamp) Simons. She was raised in Churdan and Dexter. Bernadine married Robert Burke on January 18, 1952 in North Carolina while Bob was serving in the US Army. Following Bob's service they made their home in Madrid where they raised their four sons. Bernadine was a homemaker and later was a clerical worker at Federal Prescription in Madrid. In 1981, they opened Burke's Restaurant in Madrid where she worked until retirement in 1994. She was a den mother for Madrid Cub Scouts for many years, a member of St. Malachy Catholic Church and God's Coffee Club. Bernadine enjoyed quilting and needle point but her passion was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bernadine is survived by her husband of 64 years, Robert, four sons, David (Becky) Burke of La Porte City, IA, Robert (Rosie) Burke Jr., Thomas Burke, and Verne (Mindy) Burke, all of Madrid; eight grandchildren, Lance (Beth) Burke, Lindsey Tjernagel, Joseph Burke, Matthew Burke, Jackie (Steve) Arico, Lynae (Jeremy) Bethards, Aaron (Kate) Burke and Simon (Nora) Burke; 21 great-grandchildren; her siblings Eugene (Mary) Simons, LeRoy (JoAnn) Simons, Edward (Margaret) Simons and Leonard (Mary) Simons; and her sister-in-law Tish Simons.
