Dave grew up alongside his brothers, Jim and Tom Arnstein. The family moved to Colorado Springs in 1970, where David graduated from Cheyenne Mountain High School and later, Colorado College.
Dave was an athlete and outdoor enthusiast from an early age. In Michigan, he was gymnastics state champion. When he moved to Colorado, he quickly took on Colorado sports such as skiing at the Broadmoor and beyond, camping in the mountains and riding dirt bikes near his Cheyenne Mountain home. He later competed in triathlons and became an avid cyclist. He also climbed (and skied down) the highest mountain in Russia and Europe, the 18,510' Mount Elbrus.
From a young age, Dave was an observer of nature and the beauty of the natural world. Dave knew that the beauty he saw was not there by chance and rather the work of something much larger. Growing up in the Detroit suburbs, Dave was surrounded by a lively Jewish community that he always felt a part of. This included trips to the barber shop with his Yiddish-speaking grandfather and friends. He carried his family's history with him with pride and was always yearning to learn more about his ancestors and bloodline. His intellectual curiosity led him away from…and ultimately back to…his Jewish roots. He found comfort, stimulation, and joy in his weekly Torah studies, and eagerly taught his friends, family and community what he learned.
Dave was a prolific artist and advocate for Colorado Springs artists. As the son of Katy Keck Arnsteen, a professional painter, sculptor and illustrator, art was in his blood. Not only did he paint and build with his hands, he had a natural inclination to learn and artistically interpret the world around him.
David loved people. He had a gift for connection, whether it was with the fourth graders he taught at Colorado Springs School, the friends of his sons, the people he met when delivering food for Project Angel Heart, or the neighbors he would get to know as friends. He was that guy - quick with a warm smile, easy to laugh, and able to make lasting connections. He poured the same love into his own family.
We will miss our wonderful, loving guy.
