Dr. Richard S. Bornstein, the director of the oncology therapy program at the Mt. Sinai Center for Breast Health and a nationally respected researcher, died on Aug. 18 at age 60. One of the principal clinical investigators of the . National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project for 17 years, Dr. Bornstein pioneered in developing alternatives to' mastectomies for women with breast cancer. Since 1990, Dr. Bornstein had served as medical director of the Visiting Nurse Association. He was the editor of the professional journal Seminars in Oncology and thefounder of the Medical Oncology Associates practice at Mt. Sinai.

A native of Cleveland, Dr. Bornstein finished an internship at Mt. Sinai Hospital and a residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit before completing a fellowship in oncology at the University of Minnesota. During the 1970s, Dr. Bornstein directed clinical research at the American Oncologic Hospital, and taught at the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University medical schools. He returned to Cleveland in 1976 and became head of Mt. Sinai's oncology department.

He had a special interest in pursuing the benefits of tai chi, meditation and other holistic techniques for healing. A world traveler, his interests ranged from art, theater and photography to racquetball and Softball. At onetime, he owned race horses. A graduate of Cleveland Heights High School and Western Reserve University, he received his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Surviving Dr. Bornstein are his wife of 16 years, son, ; daughter, and a granddaughter. Contributions may be made to the VNA of Cleveland Hospice, the Orange Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library or the Gathering Place. Cleveland Jewish News
