Towards the end of the war, fighting broke out near Avelgem, which sent the town into chaos. The town had been claimed by the British, but was now the target of German bombardment. The civilians of Avelgem --- mostly women and children --- took shelter in their basements as the Germans reigned hell down on their town. As an added act of barbarity, though, some of the German shells contained lethal gas.
As the yellow-green clouds of death descended over the town, Avelgem's children died choking. Many casualties were suffered over the weekend of the attack; others would die in agony in the coming weeks, having inhaled too much poison to live. In total, an estimated 273 people died as a result of the Avelgem gas attack, a horrific war crime against innocent civilians.
