Son of Simon Bartlett and Susan Van Patten Van Patten of Glenville, NY. He was the second of at least 7 children. John married Rebecca Hill 1861, she died in 1865 shortly after her two small sons died but her daughter Esther Adella survived. He then married Zeruia Grandy Mount, who also had a daughter (Mary Elizabeth Mount). They had 4 more children.
