Joseph was born Giuseppe Catalanotte (note: other document and media newspaper: Spelled the surname as Catalanotto) March 8th, 1900 to father Liborio Catalanotte and Vincenza Giacalone (Note: Giacalone is also another well known Italian American Mafia family in the Detroit, Michigan area, unknown at this time if the mother is in any relation to the same family.) Married to Mary Ruisi on 9 Jun 1926 - MEMORIAL ID: 70520087 two daughters Virginia - birth about 1928, and Angelina birth about 1929.

Joseph "Cockeyed Joe" Catalanotte, had been arrested about 23 times, One of those arrest sent him to Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary Nov 5th, 1953, and was later release, winning an appeal on his second trail, but he had an order to be deported, which was up held. He was deported May 1958 to Cuba, but by December 1958 he was deported to Italy by Cuba.
