James A. Beckett, age 76, of Gratis, Ohio, died Monday, Feb. 13, 2006, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind. He was born Feb. 16, 1929, to Arthur and Gladys (Matix) Beckett near Fairhaven, Ohio, in Preble County. He was a United States Marine veteran of World War II, H&S Company 3rd Battalion 11th Marines -- 1st Marine Division, served in China and Guam from 1945 and 1946. He worked at the Register-Herald 1954 to 1966 and retired from Miami University of Middletown Campus in August 1988.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Viola Coleman Beckett, of 54½ years; one son, Joseph (Sharon) Beckett of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two daughters, Suella (Mike) Reynolds of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Marian (Keith) Armstrong of Gratis, Ohio; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Beckett of Camden; eight grandchildren, Randy, Ross and Gary C. Parsons, Jennifer, Ashleigh and Amber Beckett, Pamela and Brandon Lynch; three great-grandchildren, Brieanna and Shiann Parsons of South Carolina and Mathew Parsons of Arizona; and two stepgrandchildren; one sister, Mary Hubbard of Oxford, Ohio.

His father, Arthur, preceded him in death March 1977; his mother, Gladys, in March 1991; a son, Jerry Beckett, in February 2005.

Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery in Gratis, Ohio.
