Matilda was born in White Oak, Ohio, and migrated with her family to Laclede County, Missouri. There she met William Pinnell. After marrying in 1843, they migrated to Hermann, Missouri where she had two sons, Benjamin and Wiley. William was killed by Indians in January 1843 at Toby's Landing near Jefferson City, MO.

She married Thomas Atwood in 1848 and moved back to Laclede County. Together they had three sons. In the late 1850s, they moved to Erath County, Texas where they raised cattle. Her son, Benjamin, died in 1862 as a Confederate soldier. Shortly after the beginning of the Civil War, the couple started on a trip to Mexico to purchase cattle. Matilda got sick on the trip and died in Uvalde, Texas where she was buried along the Leona river.
