Enlisted in the Army of the Confederacy at Hermann, MO on 10-4-1862, He was attached to Captain James A. Price's Company C, Baylor's Regiment of TX Cavalry. Later he was transferred to Wald's Texas Legion, Company C, under Captain Bradley. His tour of duty was in the Campaign along the Mississippi River and he was present at the Battle of Vicksburg. His account of that battle, in a letter to his step-father and mother was a classic and has been printed in many national magazines. He was honorably discharged on 5-25-1865. After his marriage, he lived in the area north of the present City of Weatherford. The settlement became known as "Pinnell Settlement" and bears that name even today. (11 miles north of Weatherford)
