Joseph Bonapart was born on 21 April 1889 in the Grodno guberniya in the Russian Empire to Menassy Bonapart and Hannah Dlugacz. He married Pauline "Pearl" Mackler in 1912 in Manhattan, New York. They had two children. Their son Wallace was killed (MIA) during WWII and is memorialized at the Manilla American Cemetery in the Philippines. Joseph was the executive director of the Vista del Mar Child Care Service in Los Angeles, California. He died at the age of 83 on 19 January 1973 and is buried at Hillside Memorial Park.

BONAPART, Joseph, 83, beloved husband of Pearl Bonapart, ... devoted brother of Lillian Grabow, Jack Bonapart of Florida and Benjamin Bonapart of San Francisco. Service Friday, 1 p.m., at Hilliside Memorial Park Chapel. Groman Mortuary, directors. In lieu of flowers, family prefers contributions to the Wallace Bonapart Fund, Vista del Mar, 3200 Motor Ave., Los Angeles.
