Pat Hollifield Wheeler, 82, was born on May 8, 1940, to Curtis Sr. and Wilda Hollifield. An amazing woman was taken home to her Lord and Savior Sunday night, December 4, 2022.

Pat grew up in Greer, South Carolina, and graduated from Greer High School, Class of 1958. She married John W. Wheeler III on August 18, 1962. After finishing two years at North Greenville Jr. College, she graduated with Honors, cum laude from Furman University, and began teaching for a short time at Hillcrest High School in Greenville. Additionally, she graduated with a Master of Social Work from the University of South Carolina. Pat taught Psychology and Sociology at North Greenville College for three years. She spent her life serving God by serving others.

Under the guidance of the National Bethany Christian Adoption Services office, she opened the first Bethany office in South Carolina. There are untold numbers of children who are alive today because of her work with Bethany Christian Adoption services. She retired after 20 years of service counseling women and working on international and local adoptions.

Pat was an active member of Second Presbyterian Church of Greenville for 60 years.

In 1996, she was awarded the Order of the Palmetto for her work in adoption by then Governor David Beasley, which is the highest civilian honor awarded to South Carolinians who demonstrate extraordinary lifetime achievement, service and contributions of national or statewide significance. She was also chosen for the national Angels in Adoption award which was presented to Pat at the White House on September 11, 2001. Evacuation of the White House was ordered during the presentation as the Pentagon-bound plane flew overhead.

She is survived by her husband, John W. Wheeler III; four children, Suzanne Brown (Rex), John Wheeler (Lesley Jones), Karen Zdonek (Jesse), and Janet Dorneker (Jerry); 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and her brother, Curt Hollifield (Doris).

She is preceded in death by a grandchild, Morgan Dorneker.

Pat will be missed, but for those of us who know the Lord, we will be together again.
