Archibald T. Bennett worked as a merchant in Apalachicola, Franklin County, Florida between the late 1830s and early 1850s. He operated the United States mail line from Charleston, South Carolina to Apalachicola. In 1850, he served as the Probate Judge of Franklin County, Florida.

About 1853, Archibald T. Bennett moved his family to New Orleans, where he continued to work as a wholesale merchant. In the 1870s, he went into business with his son, Pickens C.
