About 1853, Archibald T. Bennett moved his family to New Orleans, where he continued to work as a wholesale merchant. In the 1870s, he went into business with his son, Pickens C. Bennett, but they went bankrupt in the latter 1870s. In late 1877 or early 1878, they moved to Fayette County, Texas, perhaps to escape creditors. Archibald T. Bennett died there in May 1879. His widow and son moved back to New Orleans by 1884.
