Tabitha Bennett was born in what was then Pendleton District South Carolina, now Anderson County, the daughter of Elisha Bennett and Sarah Todd. She married Archibald Mayfield about 1814. In the early 1820s, Tabitha and Archibald moved their family to Tuscaloosa County Alabama, settling in the southeastern portion of the county near Bear Creek. After Archibald's premature death in 1833, her father-in-law, Samuel Mayfield, helped her settled Archibald's estate. Tabitha continued to work her farm with the help of her children. She died there on 24 August 1842.
