Abilene, Texas - Carl Bacon, 90, passed away Friday, February 15, 2008.

A funeral service will be held Monday, February 18, at First Christian Church in Abilene at 10:30 a.m., followed by the graveside service in Cedar Hill Cemetery directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory Street. Carl Terry Bacon was born in Will's Point, Texas on May 15, 1917 to Tom and Mamie Bacon, and grew up in Abilene, Texas, the fourth of five children that included sister Lillian, and brothers Thomas, Turner and Roy. While attending North Texas State Teacher's College in Denton, he met and fell in love with Eloise Minnerly, who was attending Texas Woman's College, and they were married shortly after graduation, on October 11, 1941. During their early married years, while Carl was in the Navy, the couple lived in Chicago and Gulfport, Mississippi, but they settled back in Texas where Carl continued in college, earning an MS degree from Rice University. Over the years Carl worked as Assistant Principal of Memorial Jr. High in Kingsville, Principal of Sinton High School, Physics Teacher at Abilene High School, then finished his career teaching Physics at McMurry University in Abilene.

Eloise and Carl had three children; Carla, born in 1954, Terry, born in 1956, and Susan, born in 1958. The Bacon family enjoyed many summers camping in Colorado. Carl loved photography and enjoyed many years of social and charitable activities with the Lion's Club. After the kids left home, Eloise and Carl became long-time active members of the Good Sam's Club, traveling and camping with their close friends. He and Eloise were also long-time members of First Christian Church in Abilene.

Carl and Eloise were loving grandparents to Michael and Cody, sons of Carla and Mike Owens, Layla Price, daughter of Susan and Mark Price, and Lee and Evan, sons of Jamie and Terry Bacon, and great-grandparents to Kanara and Tra, children of Cody Owens. 'Memaw' and 'GrandDaddy' loved taking the grandchildren on camping trips and to their lot on Lake Brownwood.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers and sisters, his daughter Susan, and his grandson Michael. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years by only six days; Eloise passed away on February 9, 2008.

He is survived by his daughter Carla Owens with husband Mike, and son Terry with wife Jamie, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Carl and Eloise have lived happily in their home during their last years, cared for by Carla and Mike. The family would like to thank Amy Wester for her loving help during the past year and Dr. Streigler and his staff.
