In the fall of 1866 John and Ruth sold their land in the Laurel Hill Community of Neshoba County, MS, to his brother James, and joined a wagon train made up of relatives and neighbors who had grown up together in the Laurel Hill Community and attended the Old Carolina Presbyterian Church and school.

Most were related by blood or marriage. The wagon train was made up of people named McKay, McDonald, Foster, Stribling, Gambling, McMillian, and others. Most of the men had been in either Williams Co., MS Cavalry or Scotland Guard of CSA.
