From The Decatur Advertiser, March 28 1902:
We were made sad on hearing of the death of Capt. John Royer, 76 years of age. He was a noble Christian citizen and neighbor; a consistent member of the Baptist church and a brave Confederate soldier with the rank of captain. He died on the 2d of April and will be sadly missed in the county. We would say to the sorrowing relatives weep not, for he has gone to rest.

Inscription
John Taylor Royer was in the 5th and the 10th Alabama Cavalry, not the 10th Alabama Infantry. The mistake was made in Washington D. C. because the paperwork did state "10th Alabama Cavalry". I hope that it was just a human error.
Gravesite Details
John's wife, Maryann Elizabeth Bodery Royer is buried next to John. Also their son John Price Royer and daughter Sarah Catherine Royer Gamble Cornelius are buried down from John and Maryann in unmarked graves.
