Rincon – William Johnny Tillman, 79, died at home surrounded by his family on Monday, June 19, 2017 after a long illness. He was born in Bulloch County on December 16, 1937 and was the son of the late Lester and Sarah Irene Tillman.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lester Tillman, mother, Sarah Irene Hodges Tillman. His oldest brother, George Dewey Tillman, was killed in action in the Korean War and was awarded seven medals for his service. He was also preceded in death by two older brothers, Archie Tillman and Curtis Tillman, and four sisters, Ida Jeannette Tillman, Betty Jean Tillman Gilder, Sarah Joyce Tillman Winters, and Ruby Lee Tillman Gilder.
He is survived by one sister, Mary Tillman Coleman.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Linda Gilder Tillman. They were married on August 18, 1962. He is also survived by his three daughters, Terrie Lynn Tillman Stille, Wanda Renee Tillman Morgan (Neil), and Lonnie Elizabeth Tillman Cribbs (Wayne). Also, his grandchildren, Brandon Stille (Kayla), Zachary Stille, Monica Black (Sean), Hailey Wynn (Kaleb), Allison Cribbs, and Daniel Cribbs. Also his great-grandchildren, Alex Stille, Raegen Stille, Brantley Stille, Evelyn Stille, Ansleigh Black, and Charlee Black, and one on the way, Carter Wynn. Also many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He proudly worked as a heavy equipment operator with Porter-Huggins in Local Union #474 for well over 40 years until his retirement. He could operate any and every piece of equipment with exquisite precision and smoothness. He made it look so easy. He was also known as a "jack of all trades." Until days before his death, he was willing and very able to give advice on "how to fix something."
He was happiest when he was outside working in his garden. He not only fed his immediate family with everything he grew, but lots of extended family and neighbors as well. For years he enjoyed going camping with his family at Elijah Clark and Richard B. Russell State Parks. He loved to watch his grandkids water ski and knee board behind his boat, but most of all, he loved to go fishing.
The family would like to thank Hospice Savannah and Strickland's Funeral Home for their help in his last days.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church in Rincon, Georgia on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. His body will be cremated per his request and his ashes will eventually be buried with his wife at the time of her death.
