Jack was born 2 Aug 1934 in Queens, New York, son of Niles M. Fargason and Margueritte Brittingham. After graduating from Nyak High School, he joined the US Army, where he was initially stationed in Japan. In 1959 he began an intense program learning Russian at the US Army language school in Monterey, California. After graduation, he was stationed in Germany for a time before returning to Okinawa. At some point he served as a Green Beret in Vietnam. He retired in 1979 with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer, living in Utah and, finally, Florida, until his death.

While in Japan he married a Japanese citizen; no further information. On 23 May 1963 he married Ursula Schortemeier in Brooklyn, New York; they were the adoptive parents of one son.

Jack is the gg-grandson of suffragette Lide Parker (Smith) Meriwether.
