John Joseph Kaminchaitis was the 4th of 6 children born to Katrina Vaitkunas and Joseph Kaminchaitis.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and like his siblings, he changed his surname to Cummings. He was stationed in Richmond and served 3 years aboard the USS Omaha. According to papers, his widow applied for a military headstone and his rank was listed as: MM 2/C; MML2

On 28 May 1949, he married Julia Ann Ziman and together they had 3 sons. After WWII, he was an employee of the General Electric Company.

Sadly, he died under mysterious circumstances in August 1964, just 2 months after his brother, Joe died of an apparent suicide. John had been missing for a week before his body had been discovered. His death was ruled a suicide by the coroner, according to newspaper accounts at the time.
