Carrie was one of the nine children of Jas H. and Idonia Sawyer Jones. She graduated from high school when she was 16 years old and from Huntingdon College in Montgomery AL at the age of 19. She taught high school and was certified to teach more than 15 subjects. She also coached women's basketball. She married Edward John Collins in 1928 and they had one child, Gwynn Marie Collins Akin Bowers. Carrie was a popular and strict teacher who taught school for more than 30 years in Pensacola. Her favorite grade to teach was the fourth grade.
