Volene Wiggins Cross Schaffer, 99, of Houston, Texas, peacefully passed away on September 4, 2022. She was the sweetest person you'd ever know.
Volene was born on November 2, 1922 to Arthur and Vola Wiggins in Houston, Texas. She had a brother, Murray Wiggins, whom she loved dearly. She graduated from Reagan High School and attended the University of Houston, where she was a member of the Court of the Beauty Queen.

After college, she worked as a Rice Inspector at a local rice factory. There, she met her future husband, Finis Goodloe Cross. He was a handsome young corporate pilot, who had flown combat missions over Germany during WWII. They were blessed with three children: Corky, Jan and Tom.

Throughout her marriage, she would say she felt as though she were still on her honeymoon. Volene and Finis had an interesting and full life together. They were married 53 years until Finis' death in 2000. Some years later while in her 80s, Volene found love for a second time, with Orville Schaffer. Their marriage was relatively brief, lasting only 6 years until Orville's passing.

Volene loved the Eastern Stars, gardening, and animals. Mostly, she loved to help others. She could always put a smile on her face, through thick or thin.

Volene is survived by her 3 children: Finis Arthur Cross, Jannette Volene Cross, and Thomas Murray Cross. Other survivors include her four grandchildren: Nils Smith and his wife Katie of New York City, NY; Becky Kiser and her husband Chris Kiser of The Woodlands, TX; Crissy Naranjo and her husband Andrew Naranjo of La Porte, TX; and Kimberly Cross. She also is survived by her six great grandchildren: Emery Smith, Shelby Smith, Karis Kiser, Moriah Kiser, Chandler Kiser and Scarlett Naranjo. Other surviving relatives include her nieces, Sharon Parham and Karen Ditty, and her nephews, Jim Wiggins, John Wiggins and Keith Markuson. She will be missed.

A graveside service for Volene will be held Thursday, September 15, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Historical Hollywood Cemetery, 3506 N Main St., Houston, TX 77009.
