In 1929 Carmie married Paul Gillis Ward and they were united for 65 years until his passing in 1995. Mrs. Ward worked for the Tazewell County Schools as a cafeteria manager for 15 years. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and was called Aunt Carmie by most of her family and friends. Mrs. Ward was a member of the Tuesday Morning Prayer Warriors and also attended Claypool Hill Bible Church. Carmie enjoyed playing card games, checkers and sewing and quilting.
In addition to her parents and her husband Mrs. Ward was preceded by one infant daughter, Cora; and nine brothers and two sisters and a great-granddaughter, Ashley Danielle Shortridge. Mrs. Ward was also the last survivor of her immediate family in her generation.
Survivors include her two daughters, Velma Wardsmith and her husband Roscoe of Pounding Mill, Va., Elsie Shortridge and her husband Richard of Cedar Bluff, Va.; two grandchildren, Pamela Sparks and her husband Frank of Bristol, Tenn., Jefferey Shortridge and his wife Tammy Of Hickory, N.C.; five great-grandchildren, Paul, Anastasia and Londyn Shortridge, Sgt. David A. Compton and Austin Sparks; one great-great-grandson, Christian Alyxander Compton.
Funeral services will be Monday, February 11, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Carl Tegeler, and the Rev. Delmer Smoskey officiating. Burial will follow at the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands, Va. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. at Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff. Pallbearers will be Ken Trent, Noah Phipps, Lonnie Cole, Buck Phipps, Austin sparks, Jeff Shortridge, Quay White and Paul Shortridge. Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Cole, Jack Elswick, Bill Yates, Frank Sparks, Edward Cole, Hoyt Ringstaff, Ted Horn, Dennis Hamm and Joe Touts.
