He is the paternal grandson of Henry Kollock Nash & Mary Simpson of Hillsboro, Orange County, NC; and a direct descendant of Gov. Abner Nash & Mary Whiting Jones of Virginia. He was the maternal grandson of Rev. Joseph Blount Cheshire & Elizabeth Toole Parker of Tarboro.
He attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill (1906-1908). He left University, and by age 21, had became a salesman for Royster Guano Company, and lived in Norfolk.
When World War I broke out, Sam Jr. joined the American Expeditionary Forces and served as a captain in the 307th Infantry Division, United States Army, in France.
Returning home from war, he met and married Mary Evelyn Jones of Norwich, NY, daughter of Sen. Samuel A. Jones & Clara P. Bartow on June 6, 1923. He later moved into banking and worked in Oklahoma and Texas, and eventually with National City Bank in New York City.
Samuel and Mary Evelyn Jones Nash would later divorce, and she pursued a career on the stage, and never remarried, passing on July 28, 1965. No children resulted from this marriage.
On February 4, 1936, Samuel married (2nd) to Rosalie Burbank of Wilmington, daughter of Thomas Sparrow Burbank & Mary L. Lippitt. Samuel would later operate a nursery and landscaping business in Rocky Mount.
Samuel died on November 27, 1940 following injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. He was interred at Calvary Episcopal in Tarboro.
His widow survived him 42 years, passing on April 14, 1982 at age 82.
