CLIFTON GARNER was born on December 19, 1939 to the late Matthew and Lula T. Garner in the quaint town of Satartia, Mississippi. He was a member of the Rose Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Satartia while he lived there. Clifton was the oldest of seven children and studied in a one-room school during his elementary school years. In 1958, he graduated from Yazoo City Training High School in Yazoo City, Mississippi before serving in the United States Army and National Guard from 1962-1965 where he ranked as a Sergeant. Following his Army service he moved to Philadelphia where he met and married his wife, Mae Sutton Garner. They married on September 8, 1965. It is from this union, his daughter, Trenya Nichelle Garner, was born. He adored Mae and Trenya and his love for them shone in the countless acts of kindness and selflessness that he exhibited. Whether it be rising at 5AM to catch the bus to work every morning in the snow and ice to provide a comfortable home and life, or the generous gifts that he gave them both. Clifton was always a humble, quiet, but strong figure to and for his family.

Affectionately known as 'Bump' by his siblings and as 'Pumpkin' by his daughter, Clifton was a very brilliant man. He completed multiple courses at the United States Army Air Defense School including defense acquisition radars maintenance classes where he was often the only African-American student in the class. He also completed trainings at Sony Corporation of America for videocassette maintenance. Clifton's work experience included Bench and Field Service Technician at Peirce Phelps, Inc.; Television Studio Technician at Delaware County Community College; Electronic System Mechanic at the Philadelphia Naval Yard for over 25 years; and Electrician at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Philadelphia.

In his earlier days, Clifton was an avid bowler and participated in many organized bowling leagues in the Philadelphia area. He also enjoyed visiting his family in Mississippi each year and reminiscing about the good old days in Satartia. He had a favorite chair in his home that he watched television in that every family member and visitor knew not to sit in because it was his 'designated seat'. While sitting in his favorite seat, he always enjoyed drinking from his favorite cup. Clifton was one of the kindest men you ever met. He led a simple but very great life.

He leaves to cherish his great memories, wife, Mae and daughter, Trenya; six siblings: Emma Price and Mary Garner of Chicago, Illinois, Carolyn Sutton of Saint Joseph, Missouri, Larry Garner of Satartia, Mississippi, Sonji Foster of Greenwood, Mississippi, and Calvin Garner (Rachel) of Satartia, Mississippi; one brother-in-law Sylvester Sutton (Gloria) of Richmond, Virginia; three sisters-in-law: Harriet Adkinson of Philadelphia, Ruechell Sutton of Edenton, North Carolina, and Francine Sutton Wilson (William) of Frederick, Maryland in addition to a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members. He will be missed immensely.
