Joshua and his wife, Polly, and eight children made the trip to Illinois from Anderson County, Tennessee and settled a short distance south east of Middle Creek Church in Hamilton County, Illinois about 1836. On the way, after passing through a narrow section of Kentucky, the family stopped on the bank of the Ohio River and were ferried across that stream to Shawneetown.
