William Johnston was the son of the Ulster Scot immigrant Robert Johnston. On 2 May 1833, he and Susan Harbaugh were married by Rev. George W. Glessner of the Salem, Trinity and Fisher's German Reformed Churches. While the Salem and Trinity Churches are in Waynesboro, Fisher's Church is in Quincy. William was a very successful farmer in Waynesboro for many years. In 1870, he owned real estate valued at $12,125. He was the father of eleven children. He and his wife are buried beside his parents in the Harbaugh Reformed Church Cemetery near Rouzerville. His grave stone bears the simple affirmation, "Asleep in Jesus." While the engraver of the church's stained glass windows erred in the spelling of the family name, William's and Susan's gravestones at Harbaugh Church Cemetery bear the correct spelling, Johnston.
