Sometime between the 1860 and 1870 census, he moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he worked for some years as a welder. He was married at least twice, first to Kate whose maiden name is unknown and second to Mary Ann Baer. It appears that Kate died between 19 November 1870 and 3 June 1880. About the same time, George left welding and became a clergyman in the Episcopal Church. Sadly, his second wife passed away in 1897. It appears from her burial that the family had left Philadelphia sometime after the 1880 census for Somerset in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. As an Episcopal minister, Rev. Johnston later left Pennsylvania altogether, moving to Georgetown, South Carolina sometime in or before 1900.
Rev. Johnston died in Georgetown on 29 September 1918at the age of 85 years, 2 months, and 3 days. His South Carolina death certificate unfortunately lists his mother's maiden name erroneously as Barkdoll. His remains were taken to Philadelphia, where he was buried at Mount Vernon Cemetery. Following are his known children ...
